Wayne McGregor - Choreographer's Creative Process

Three Creative Processes of Physical Thinking

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPPxXeoIzRY&feature=youtu.be

Wayne McGregor used three different choreographic processes to create a phrase.  For the first process, he used a stimulus which was the “TED” logo and improvised a sequence based on this stimulus. This first process is when an idea is taken from one body (McGregor) and that idea is translated to someone else’s body (Dancers).  The dancers interpreted his body movements, making it a direct transfer of energy. I found this process interesting as it allows the choreographer and the dancer to create a collaborative phrase that’s unique and different. The next process created a sequence of movements that used physical extensions of the body as the dancers moved. I would love to explore this process as it allows the choreographer to quickly create abstract movements that are aesthetically pleasing. The third process is called mental architecture. The choreographer describes a mental vivid image which enables the dancers to make choices for themselves about what to dance. All three processes are fairly quick. However, the movements created give room for both the choreographer and dancers to use physical thinking, be more creative and as McGregor says "misbehave beautifully". I am interested in exploring all three of these processes to see how the different processes effect the choreographic style.

  1. A great reflection Lizzy! Definetly an interesting process. It would be great to see you explore the idea of "misbehaving beautifully" in your upcoming choreography. Do not be afraid to break the mould and try something 'new'.
