Task 7 - Communicate Contrasting Ideas in a Duet

We decided to explore the two contrasting ideas of push and pull. The first snapshot was taken from a movement in our varied push sequence. It shows Alex (left) in the midst of pushing my ankle so that one of my legs is bent in the air whilst one of Alex's legs was extended in the opposite direction. To show this idea of "push", there was very little contact between the two dancers to represent the space created during a pushing action. We also wanted this particular movement to be large to emphasise the push further. Therefore, we chose to use different body parts to be extended in different directions to create this illusion of space. The second snapshot was a movement from our pull sequence. It shows Alex grabbing my arm with both hands whilst I extended one leg in parallel to our arms. To show the contrasting idea of "pull", we created much more obvious contact between each other. Our link between our arms helped to represent the grip of a pulling motion. We also wanted to create a sense of pulling from one dancer to the other. The parallel lines created by the legs and arms as well as a slight back bend helped to portray this idea. Looking at the two photos, you can see an obvious contrast between the two movements. From large to minimal spacing, from different facings of our bodies to facing each other and from little contact to noticeable contact. All of these aspects of the movements helped to communicate these contrasting ideas of "push" and "pull".
